The Islamic New Year begins on 1 Muharram, the first day of the Hijri calendar. It is a quiet, reflective start to the year: a time to thank Allah for the year that passed, ask forgiveness for our mistakes and pray for barakah in the months ahead. In this guide you will find 80+ Islamic New Year wishes, short Hijri New Year messages, duas for the new year, Muharram messages and Urdu wishes you can send to family and friends.

Quick answer: The next Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1449 AH, is expected on or around 5–6 June 2027. The exact day depends on local moon sighting, so it can differ by one day between countries such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India and the UK.

What Is the Islamic New Year (Hijri New Year)?

The Hijri calendar starts from the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the companions chose the Hijrah as the starting point of the Muslim calendar, and Muharram was kept as its first month.

Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36). The Prophet ﷺ also called it “the month of Allah” and said the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Muharram (Sahih Muslim 1163).

Unlike the 1st of January, the Islamic New Year is not a festival of parties or fireworks. Most Muslims mark it with reflection, dua, extra worship and by sending Islamic New Year wishes to loved ones.

Duas for the Islamic New Year

There is no special prayer that is required on the Islamic New Year. However, Muslims commonly read duas for a new month and new beginnings. Here are two well-known ones, followed by simple duas you can send as Islamic New Year wishes.

Dua on Seeing the New Moon

This dua is reported from the Prophet ﷺ when he saw the new crescent (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi). Since the new year begins with the Muharram moon, many people read it at the start of the year.

Transliteration: Allahumma ahillahu ‘alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, rabbi wa rabbuk-Allah.

Meaning: O Allah, let this moon rise over us with blessing and faith, safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.

Dua for the Beginning of a New Year

Some companions used to teach this dua at the start of a new month or year. It is reported by al-Tabarani in al-Mu’jam al-Awsat, and scholars differ on the strength of its chain, but its meaning is beautiful and it is widely read.

Transliteration: Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wa ridwanim-minar-Rahman, wa jiwarim-minash-shaitan.

Meaning: O Allah, bring it upon us with security and faith, safety and Islam, the pleasure of the Most Merciful and protection from Shaytan.

Tips for Writing Your Own Islamic New Year Wishes

  • Start with Allah’s name or a dua. A wish that includes a dua carries more meaning than a plain greeting.
  • Keep it personal. Mention the person’s name or something you want for them, such as health, a new job or a calm heart.
  • Be respectful of Muharram. Avoid party-style or joking messages, because many Muslims observe this month with mourning and reflection.
  • Use the greeting your family knows. Arabic speakers often say “Kul ‘am wa antum bikhair”, while in Pakistan and India people say “Naya Islami Saal Mubarak”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it allowed to say “Happy Islamic New Year”?

Many scholars say there is no harm in exchanging good wishes and duas at the start of the Hijri year, as long as it is not treated as a religious ritual. What do you say on the Islamic New Year?

Common greetings are “Happy Hijri New Year”, “Kul ‘am wa antum bikhair” (may you be well every year) and, in Urdu, “Naya Islami Saal Mubarak”. You can also add a dua for peace, iman and barakah.

There is no required dua. Many Muslims read the new moon dua from Jami’ at-Tirmidhi and the new-month dua reported by al-Tabarani: “Allahumma adkhilhu ‘alayna bil-amni wal-iman…”

Why is Muharram the first month of the Islamic calendar?

No. The Islamic New Year is on 1 Muharram, and Ashura is on 10 Muharram, nine days later.
