When a Muslim friend loses someone, the right words are simple: remind them that we all return to Allah, pray for the one who died, and ask Allah to give the family patience. Islamic Condolence Messages guide gives you authentic duas with their hadith references, ready-to-send messages in English and Urdu, and the etiquette of ta’ziyah (offering condolences) so your words comfort instead of hurt.

What to Say First: Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji’un

The first words a Muslim says on hearing of a death come from the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:156):

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un — “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.”

Allah praises those who say this in hardship and promises them His blessings and mercy (2:157). Start your message with it, then add a dua for the deceased and a dua for the family.

Authentic Islamic Condolence Messages Duas (With References)

Authentic Islamic Condolence Duas (With References)

These are the strongest words you can send, because they come from the Sunnah.

1. The Prophet’s ﷺ own words of condolence

Inna lillahi ma akhadha, wa lahu ma a’ta, wa kullu shay’in ‘indahu bi-ajalin musamma, faltasbir waltahtasib.

Meaning: “To Allah belongs what He took and what He gave, and everything with Him has a fixed term. So be patient and hope for reward.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1284, Sahih Muslim 923)

2. Dua for the deceased from the funeral prayer

Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu, wa ‘afihi wa’fu ‘anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi’ mudkhalahu.

Meaning: “O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, keep him safe, pardon him, honour his arrival and make his grave spacious.” (Sahih Muslim 963). For a woman, say laha, warhamha, ‘afiha, ‘anha, nuzulaha, mudkhalaha.

3. The dua the Prophet ﷺ made for Abu Salamah

Allahumma-ghfir lahu, warfa’ darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.

Meaning: “O Allah, forgive him, raise his rank among the rightly guided, widen his grave and fill it with light.” (Sahih Muslim 920)

4. A traditional line for the family

A’dhamallahu ajrak, wa ahsana ‘aza’ak, wa ghafara li-mayyitik.

Meaning: “May Allah make your reward great, make your consolation beautiful and forgive your deceased.” This wording is reported from the early Muslims and quoted by Imam al-Nawawi in al-Adhkar; it is not a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ, but scholars recommend it.

The Dua the Grieving Family Says Islamic Condolence Messages

Most pages mix this up. This dua is said by the person who suffered the loss, not sent to them:

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, Allahumma’jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha.

Meaning: “We belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my loss and replace it with something better.” Umm Salamah (RA) said it when her husband died, and Allah gave her the Prophet ﷺ as a husband (Sahih Muslim 918). You can gently share it with the family as a comfort.

What Not to Say to a Grieving Muslim

  • “I know exactly how you feel.” Every loss is different; say “I’m here for you” instead.
  • “Don’t cry.” The Prophet ﷺ wept when his son Ibrahim died and called his tears mercy (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303). Tears are not a lack of faith.
  • “It was their fault” or questions about how they died. Leave the details for the family to share.
  • “At least…” Any sentence that starts this way shrinks the loss.
  • Rest in peace (RIP) alone. It is not wrong, but a real dua like “May Allah forgive him” carries more meaning for a Muslim family.

How to Reply to Islamic Condolences

If you are the one grieving, a short reply is enough:

  • Jazakallahu khairan for your duas. Please keep him in your prayers.
  • Ameen, and may Allah reward you for remembering us.
(JazakAllah khair. Aap ki duaon ki zaroorat hai.)

Etiquette of Ta’ziyah: How to Support the Family

  1. Visit or call within the first three days. Scholars generally mark the main period of condolence as three days, matching the general limit on mourning in Sahih al-Bukhari 1280 (a widow’s iddah is longer, four months and ten days).
  2. Send food. When Ja’far (RA) was martyred, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for something has come to them that keeps them busy” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3132, Jami’ al-Tirmidhi 998).
  3. Keep visits short and quiet. Sit, make dua, offer practical help, and leave them space.
  4. Give sadaqah on their behalf. Deeds end at death except three: continuing charity, beneficial knowledge and a righteous child who prays for them (Sahih Muslim 1631). A water cooler, a Quran for a masjid or a donation in their name keeps rewards flowing.
  5. Remember the reward. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever consoles a believer in a calamity, Allah will clothe him with garments of honour on the Day of Resurrection (Sunan Ibn Majah 1601, graded hasan).

A few sincere words and one real dua mean more than a long speech. Choose a message above, add the person’s name, and send it today. May Allah have mercy on all our loved ones who have passed. Ameen.
