Shikwa and Jawab-e-Shikwa: Allama Iqbal’s Most Famous Nazms
No list of Iqbal Day wishes and poetry is complete without Shikwa (The Complaint) and Jawab-e-Shikwa (The Answer to the Complaint). These two long nazms are Iqbal’s most famous Urdu poems, and both are published in Bang-e-Dra. A line from either poem turns simple Iqbal Day wishes into something truly memorable.
| Nazm | First Recited | Where | Stanzas | What It Says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shikwa (شکوہ) | April 1909 | Anjuman-e-Himayat-e-Islam gathering, Lahore | 31 stanzas (6 lines each) | A Muslim respectfully complains to Allah about the decline of the Muslims. |
| Jawab-e-Shikwa (جوابِ شکوہ) | 1913 | Public gathering outside Mochi Gate, Lahore | 36 stanzas (6 lines each) | Allah’s answer: the decline is because Muslims left the true path, not because of any injustice. |
Shikwa (شکوہ) – Famous Stanzas
Opening stanza:
Kyun ziyan-kaar banun, sood-faramosh rahun… Shikwa Allah se, khakam-ba-dahan, hai mujh ko.
Meaning: Why should I keep losing and stay silent about my loss? Like the nightingale, I too must speak. My courage gives me the power to talk, and so, may dust be in my mouth, I have a complaint to make to Allah.
The famous “Mahmood and Ayaz” lines:
Aa gaya ain laraai mein agar waqt-e-namaz… Aik hi saf mein kharay ho gaye Mahmood-o-Ayaz, na koi banda raha aur na koi banda-nawaz.
Meaning: When the time for prayer came even in the middle of battle, the people of Hijaz faced the Qibla and bowed down. King Mahmood and his servant Ayaz stood in the same row. No one was a slave and no one was a master. This is one of the best lines about equality in Islam. Many people share it in their Iqbal Day wishes as a reminder of unity.
Jawab-e-Shikwa (جوابِ شکوہ) – Famous Stanzas
Opening stanza:
Dil se jo baat nikalti hai asar rakhti hai, par nahin taqat-e-parwaz magar rakhti hai…
Meaning: Words that come from the heart have power. They have no wings, yet they can fly. They rise from the dust and reach the heavens. My bold cry of love tore through the sky.
Allah’s reply:
Hum to mail-ba-karam hain, koi sail hi nahin; raah dikhlayen kise, rahrav-e-manzil hi nahin.
Meaning: I am ready to give, but no one is asking. To whom should I show the way, when no one is walking toward the goal?
The famous last couplet:
Meaning: If you stay loyal to Muhammad ﷺ, then I am yours. What is this world? The Tablet and the Pen (destiny itself) are yours.
This final couplet is one of the most loved lines in Urdu poetry and makes a beautiful addition to Iqbal Day wishes. Both nazms are very long, so we have shared only the most famous stanzas here.
