What Is Quaid-e-Azam Day?
Quaid-e-Azam Day, also called Quaid Day or Jinnah’s Birthday, honours Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the All-India Muslim League who led the Pakistan Movement and became the first Governor-General of Pakistan in August 1947. People celebrated his birthday even during his lifetime, and after independence it became a national holiday.
What does “Quaid-e-Azam” mean? It is an Urdu title that means “the Great Leader”. The people of the subcontinent gave Jinnah this title out of love and respect, and Pakistanis also call him Baba-e-Qaum, the Father of the Nation.
Quaid-e-Azam Day 2026: Why This Year Is Special
Jinnah was born on 25 December 1876, so 25 December 2026 is his 150th birthday. On Quaid Day 2025, President Asif Ali Zardari announced that 2026 would be observed as the “Year of Quaid-i-Azam” to reflect on his life and pass his ideals to the next generation (Gulf News). This makes the 2026 celebration the biggest Quaid Day in decades.

Quaid-e-Azam Day is celebrated every year on 25 December. It is a public holiday, so government offices, schools, banks and most businesses stay closed (see the official Cabinet Division holiday list 2026). Because 25 December is also Christmas, Pakistan celebrates both occasions on the same day, which is a beautiful reminder of the equal citizenship the Quaid spoke about in his 11 August 1947 speech.
